Frequently Asked Questions
  1. What disciplines will the racers do each day?
Each day may have a longer stage (one each of paddling, biking, and trekking), but racers should expect to bike, trek, and paddle on each of the three days.

  2. What type of boats will racers be using?
We will be PROVIDING boats to all the teams. They will be standard 2-seat canoes for each team. Most/all of them are Mad River 15.5 foot canoes.

  3. Do I need to bring my own paddle and PFD?
We will have stock PFDs and paddles for teams that don't want to bring/use their own.

  4. Do racers need bike boxes?
No. There wil be a bike drop pre-race and otherwise, you will be riding your bikes everywhere you need them.

  5. Will there be paddle bags?
Yes. Each team will be allowed ONE reasonably-sized paddle bag to put their paddling gear in. Obviously, larger teams may need larger bags. Teams may put any paddling-related gear in the bags. You will take the bag and everything in it with you on the paddles. You will NOT have access to these bags at the end of each day (so no resupply). You will only see them at the start and end of each paddle leg. YOu will NOT see them at the finish line until the end of day 3. Small amounts of food are okay, but please, no liquids. Heavier bags may be checked for compliance.

Ideally, your paddles will go INSIDE this bag. If that's not an option, you can label them and we will transport them separately.

  6. Boats per team?
Two-person teams will get ONE canoe. Four person teams will get TWO canoes. Three-person teams will be asked if they want ONE or TWO canoes the week before the race. Once this choice is made, it will persist for all three days of the race.
Note: canoes will not be mandatory gear for the paddle legs. Huh?

  7. Ropes? What's that all about?
There will be an outdoor climbing wall with artifical holds and a part of an obstacle course. Still working out the details. There's an outside chance of a traverse and a rappel as well.

  8. Can we get/purchase an extra set of maps?
No. There is a lot of overlap in the map set, so you will likely be able to have two people with maps for most of the race.

  9. Is there a weight/number limit on the bins?
No. The only time you will see your bins will be at Camp Powhatan, where you are free to visit your car, cabin, tent, and use as many bins as you like.

  10. If we are staying in the cabins at Powhatan, should we bring our own bedding?
Yes. Bedding will not be provided.
